Commissioning / HVAC Technician

ABP is looking to hire an exceptional Commissioning/HVAC Technician to join our growing firm. ABP is a nationally recognized independent commissioning and energy optimization consulting firm. We are dedicated to assisting building owners, developers, and design teams in the design, construction, and management of high-performance buildings. ABP’s projects cover large commercial developments, high profile and government projects, academic buildings, and more throughout the Mid-Atlantic area. ABP operates as a 12-person virtual company, with staff working from home throughout Maryland, Virginia, and DC, and meeting in person monthly.

Job Description

ABP has an immediate opening for a Commissioning / HVAC Technician with at least 4+ years experience in commissioning field work, and HVAC, Plumbing, ATC controls and/or Testing and Balancing. The Commissioning / HVAC Technician will serve as a valuable member of our team, working on multiple concurrent projects performing building commissioning services for both new construction and existing facilities for commercial, institutional, and educational buildings. The Commissioning / HVAC Technician will work closely in a team environment on multiple projects, but must be able to work independently when required, and adhere to schedules.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years of experience of building commissioning, HVAC, Automatic Temperature Controls, and/or Testing and Balancing

  • Strong fundamentals in HVAC, hydronics, automatic temperature controls and renewable energy systems design, installation and operations

  • HVAC: Hands-on experience in testing, start-up and troubleshooting of HVAC systems, including but not limited to cooling towers, chillers, packaged roof top units, ERUs, DOAS, AHUs, VRFs, VFDs, for hospitals, schools, commercial and institutional buildings.

  • Electrical (additional): Hands-on experience with equipment such as emergency generators, ATS, UPS, PDUs and power monitoring systems desired.

  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively

  • Professional appearance and demeanor

  • Ability to support multiple projects simultaneously

  • Must be highly motivated, proactive and willing to take on new challenges

  • Commissioning Certification by either BCxA, ASHRAE, AGC, ICB/TABB, AEE, or University of Wisconsin, and familiarity with LEED (preferred)

  • Experience with construction site work activity conditions and safety protocols is required.

  • Ability to build and maintain positive work relationships with the project team, vendors, contractors, and owners.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 50% of the time to project construction sites in the Mid-Atlantic (Maryland, Virginia, and DC mainly).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ability to independently create or review test procedures based on:

    • Contract Documents, specifically drawings and specifications,

    • Other design documentation such as Owner’s Project Requirements and Basis of Design,

    • Industry and standards-based best practices

  • Assist the Senior Commissioning Engineer in preparing checklists for installation verification and functional performance testing of equipment and integrated systems

  • Perform field verification of equipment installation and startup; document commissioning issues

  • Supervise or witness equipment startups, as needed

  • Oversee functional performance testing of both individual equipment and integrated systems

  • Assist in troubleshooting of commissioned equipment and systems when appropriate

  • Help maintain the Commissioning Corrective Action and Pending Issues Logs in CxAlloy and BlueRithm

  • Interface with design and construction team members to ensure commissioning activities are completed and documented and commissioning issues are addressed.
