ABP’s projects cover large commercial developments, high profile and government projects, academic buildings, and more throughout the Mid-Atlantic area. ABP operates as a 12-person virtual company, with staff working from home throughout Maryland, Virginia, and DC, and meeting in person monthly.

Job Description

ABP has an immediate opening for a Commissioning Specialist II. The position being offered is for a Batchelor’s degree graduate in Mechanical or Electrical Engineer with a strong interest in building systems (HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Controls), and desire to be part of the solution to climate change. Through their work experience, the candidate should be able to demonstrate effective problem solving, data analysis, and great communication skills. We expect the applicant to have experience in building systems, including HVAC/electrical design and/or construction.  

 

The Commissioning Specialist II will serve as a valuable member of our team, working on multiple concurrent projects performing building commissioning services for both new construction and existing commercial, institutional, and educational buildings. The Commissioning Specialist will work closely in a team environment on multiple projects, but must be able to work independently when required, and adhere to schedules. The Commissioning Specialist II will be partnered with one of our Senior Commissioning Specialists or Project Managers to immediately begin performing site work and developing commissioning documentation.  Continuing education will be provided through team site visits, on-line video calls (company training events, and other professional development available through ASHRAE and the Building Commissioning Association. Responsibilities include:

  • Perform site observation visits to observe construction progress.

  • Witness system testing such as pipe pressure tests and duct leakage tests.

  • Assist the Senior Commissioning Specialist in preparing checklists for installation verification and functional performance testing of equipment and integrated systems.

  • Maintain the Commissioning issues Logs in CxAlloy and BlueRithm.

  • Interface with design and construction team members to ensure commissioning activities are completed and documented and commissioning issues are addressed.

  • Review contractor submittals.

  • Perform design reviews.

  • Assist with the writing of commissioning specifications.

  • Prepare commissioning plans.

  • Participate in commissioning meetings with clients and contractors.

  • Perform functional performance testing on central plants, domestic hot water, lighting controls, and HVAC terminal equipment.

Requirements

  • Graduate with a Batchelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.

  • Mechanical Graduate: Understanding of the fundamentals in HVAC, hydronics, automatic temperature controls and renewable energy systems.

  • Electrical Graduate: Understanding of the fundamentals of electrical design for buildings, emergency generators, and renewable energy.

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Commissioning Specialist II or 2 years of design and/or construction site field work.

  • Proficiency with CX Alloy and BlueRithm is required.

  • Familiarity with building codes, energy codes, and ASHRAE Standards/Guidelines.

  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.

  • Ability to support multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Must be highly motivated, proactive, and willing to take on new challenges.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 50% of the time to project construction sites in the Mid-Atlantic (Maryland, Virginia, and DC mainly).
